Wheat & Grapes
These two windows present the elements of bread and wine used in Holy Eucharist. They are particularly noteworthy for the vivid, jewel-like colors of their borders and central images; in contrast, the more muted, textured forms of the background suggest loaves of bread or bunches of fruit. The sheaves of wheat in the left window are bound with a ribbon inscribed with the words "I am the bread of life," while the bunch of grapes of the right window recalls visual motifs used elsewhere in the St. James windows. Near the apex of each arch, ensconced in a red quatrefoil, are found the Greek letters "Alpha" and "Omega"; taken together, these motifs remind the viewer of the eternal presence of God, and our communion with this presence in the body and blood of Christ.
