The Resurrection & The Ascension
The last two windows of the fine series by Franz Mayer of Germany form a pair stylistically and are perhaps best treated together. Both feature a strong, simple composition and are notable for the gorgeous reds of Christ's victorious cloak against a wonderful background of sky, colored an intense glowing blue.In the "Resurrection," a triumphant Christ holds aloft a white banner with a red cross and gestures upwards with his other hand. At his feet is an astonished Roman soldier with helmet and shield, and to the left a rapt figure gazing upward. Is it, perhaps, Mary Magdalene, or is it the young man of Mark Chapter 16?
The "Ascension" shows a radiant Christ, with arms outspread in a gesture of blessing, and a dazzling golden aureole behind his head. At his feet on either side are two angels with robes of pale lilac and turquoise and beautiful golden wings.
