The Nativity

In loving memory of Jacob Standish Myers' FamilyThis window shows the Holy Family in an open shelter roofed with wheat straw. The upper background shows a deep blue sky from which the Star shines down toward the head of the Child. A grapevine ("I am the true vine") twists around one of the stall supports. From the ground spring three groups of flowers in threes, recalling the Trinity.
Joseph stands to the right behind the Child, looking directly down at him. He is dressed in a simple traveling cloak and holds a lantern in his left hand, a crook in his right. Mary kneels beside the Child. She is clad in white and blue, colors traditionally associated with the Virgin. Her right hand is raised in a gesture expressive of wonder and blessing, while her left hand arranges the coverings for her baby.
The Babe lies raised on a bed of straw. A halo encircles a gold cross above his head. He alone in the scene is gazing out directly at the viewer, as if perhaps conscious of his destiny.
