The Holy Family

In loving memory of John Peter and Martha Howe Oeland.
Luke 2:51-52
Joseph, Mary, and Jesus are shown outside their stone house. The vine to the left against a pillar is now shown bearing fruit. (And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor of God and Man.)
Joseph, in work clothes, stands to the right and leans on a saw as he looks down at Jesus. The seated Mary also gazes at Jesus while her hands are busy spinning wool with a hand spindle. At her feet is a vase of lilies, symbol of purity.
Jesus is seated on a bench, a hammer resting on the ground near his feet. A delightful touch is the curl of shaved wood on the ground to the right. We notice that Jesus is now nearing adulthood. He has turned to look at the viewer as he holds up a wooden cross that he has fashioned. It is as if he is sharing with us a secret still unknown to Mary and Joseph, but understood by us.
