Thanks to a very generous gift from the Stephen Mitchell Estate, St. James is undertaking a renovation of the entryway into our foyer and church. Over the years, the condition of the current entryway has worsened. The front patio has experienced settling, tree root damage, concrete buckling, leaning brick walls, and water damage to the retaining wall in the memorial garden. Much of the existing landscaping has become overgrown and some of the landscaping materials have reached the end of their projected lifespan. The decision was made by vestry that now is the appropriate time to address these issues holistically and to provide a safe and attractive entry for years to come.
At the request of the vestry, Luke and Mary Mitchell have assembled a team that has been working with structural engineers on a proposed renovation of the area. Members of the team include Ed Winkler, Gail Burch, Nancy LeDonne, and Stan Gibson.
Among the issues to be addressed in the renovation are storm water management, structural issues, safety issues, landscaping, and lighting. Some heavy landscaping pruning has already begun with a projected construction date for the majority of the project in early spring 2017. The plans are being finalized, and the committee is in the process of a final review of the details of the project before construction begins.
