Prayer Shawl Ministry

The St. James Prayer Shawl Ministry continues to meet at 10:00 a.m. on the third Monday of each month under the trees (weather permitting) or in the main foyer. This ministry has been very rewarding and fulfilling for our members. If you are interested, please come check us out or contact Nancy Gammons for more information at njgammons@gmail.com or 864-834-1940.

Annual Report 2021

Here we are finishing our second full year with Covid-19. The Prayer Shawl Ministry has continued to be productive even though we have a small number of members. We are now in our fourth year. This ministry has been beneficial to the individuals who receive the shawls but also an immense blessing to those of us who make them. We also make hats for chemo treated patients at Bon Secours Cancer Center.

Our production for 2021 was 79 shawls and 132 hats. Hospice has been immensely grateful for the continuous contributions we have made. They have communicated that the shawls not only comfort their patients in their last days but are a great comfort to family members as well.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to join our group or know of someone who requires the blessing of the Holy Spirit by receiving a prayer shawl.

Prayer Shawl Ministry Branches Out

Picture
The Prayer Shawl Ministry branched out this past year to include hats for chemo patients who will likely loose their hair from the effects of treatment. Last October we donated 40 hats of all colors and designs to Bon Secours Cancer Center.

The ladies in the picture received these hats to be distributed to their patients with so much excitement. They made the day feel like Christmas morning. Their hat poles have been quite empty throughout the warmer months, but the patients still love having the hats even when it is hot outside.

As the leader of this ministry I have to commend our group for their diligence and dedication to making shawls and hats. The shawls are distributed to hospice for their patients as well as members of our church and others whom we know to be in need of blessings from the Holy Spirit. If you know of someone who could use these blessings, contact Nancy Gammons (864-834-1940). We are always looking for new members who would like to join our ministry. All are welcome!

Shawls and Hats

Picture
As you can see, our shawl team is using proper Covid protocol. We all wore our masks and were apart during our gathering. Covid may still be with us for a while longer but it has not dampened our enthusiasm for providing shawls for hospice patients and hats for cancer patients who may have lost their hair due to chemo treatment. Not only is the person receiving a shawl or hat blessed, but we are blessed for having provided it with through this ministry.

The team has been very busy knitting and crocheting industriously creating 13 hats and 12 shawls. That's a lot of stitches of love and devotion for the purpose of the prayer shawl ministry. A great big Covid-style hug and thank you to all who have contributed.

If you know of someone who needs a shawl or hat or if you are interested in joining the prayer shawl team, please contact me or the parish office.

Prayer Shawl Update

Covid-19 may have devastated our world with a horrible pandemic, but it has not stifled the enthusiasm for St. James' Prayer Shawl Ministry. On April 29, several of the team met in the rear parking lot (keeping our "social distance," of course) to bring together our masterpieces of love. It had been two months since we had been able to have a regular meeting, but each person had been working diligently at home creating gorgeous shawls for hospice patients.
Picture
I was blown away when 21 shawls and 10 chemo hats were deposited in the trunk of my car. When Fr. Stephen came out to bless them, I told him we had 20 shawls in my trunk to be blessed. He replied with "I've blessed a car before but never a trunk". Of course it was the contents he was blessing, not the trunk itself.

Thanks to each of you who contributed to this wonderful windfall! Many will be warmed and comforted by your efforts.

November 2019

Prayer Shawl Ministry Celebrates Second Anniversary!

Let’s celebrate November!  It has been two years this month since the Prayer Shawl Ministry was initiated.  In those two short years 200 prayer shawls have been made. That means 200 people have received the comfort and peace from the Holy Spirit whether it was illness, accident, depression, death of a loved one or end of life events.

In the last few months we have also made hats for chemo patients at Bon Secour Cancer Center.  Twenty-four hats have been delivered to those who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy treatments.  With colder weather the hats will be a welcome accessory.

If you know of someone who could benefit from this ministry or if you want more information, please contact Nancy Gammons (864) 834-1940 or the church office.  New members are always welcome!

Hats, hats, hats!!!

Picture
The prayer shawl ministry has decided to expand its ministry to hats for chemo patients. Truly they do not need them right now, but it won't be long before cooler weather will be upon us. These patients will be so grateful to have a warm hat to wear. If you are not able to attend our regular meeting each month but would like to participate, please feel free to make hats for those in need. You can deliver them to the office and I will pick them up.

We are always in need of more prayer shawls. The nice thing about these ministries is that you can participate without ever leaving your home. It is a very special ministry that benefits two hospice groups and individuals who have received our shawls. In less than two years we have made and distributed 185 prayer shawls both inside and outside the St. James community.

July 2019
The Prayer Shawl Ministry has been very industrious lately. An appeal was made for more prayer shawls. In answer to that appeal 22 prayer shawls were submitted and blessed by Father Stephen Rhoades. Many thanks to those who so graciously spent your time in creating such beautiful works of art! Each shawl will be given either to hospice for their patients or to individuals whom we know need the blessing and peace given by the Holy Spirit. If you know of a person in need of the comfort provided by a prayer shawl, please contact Nancy Gammons.

April 2019
The prayer shawls above show examples of the beautiful, colorful, and varied designs made by the St. James Prayer Shawl Ministry. These shawls are given to individuals experiencing trying times, whether it is illness, death of a loved one, or their own final journey on earth at home or in hospice. The feedback we have received from prayer shawl recipients is all positive - warmth, comfort, and peace, to not wanting to be without it.

This ministry has been very rewarding and fulfilling for our members. If you are interested in joining this ministry, contact Nancy Gammons at 864-834-1940. We meet the third Monday in the church library from 10:00-11:30 a.m. It is a wonderful social opportunity as well. Come join us and see what we're all about.
