RECTORS MESSAGE
WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM THE BAPTISTS
June 7, 2012
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
I know that coming from me, a cradle Anglican, the title of this rectors message might seem a bit out of character. However, having been a rector for nearly a decade now, I have seen sufficient trends and indicators that have helped me to realize there is a great deal we can learn from our Baptist brothers and sisters.
In the course of my lifetime (half a century now), the way people go about choosing a church has changed dramatically. Studies on the behavior of people of faith affirm what I have seen. When I was a child, one was typically born into a family of faith, attached to a particular denomination, and if the family moved, they found a church of that same denomination in their new location.
Due to many factors, including, but not limited to, the secularization of society, the increased mobility of American families, issues with all sorts of formal, institutional organizations, that paradigm has shifted. More and more young people are raised in families that do not have a faith tradition, allowing them to church shop if they decide to become people of faith. When families move, church shopping, rather than denominational loyalty, defines what church they will attend in their new location.
For some, church has become a consumer product. People weigh the personal benefits of particular churches, often disregarding the theological differences amongst the many Christian denominations. Churches with vibrant youth programs run by parishioners have lost members to churches with less active youth programs simply because there is a professional youth minister in place. For some people, church has become a commodity physical comfort, entertainment, professional services and, as they say in the real estate market, location, location, location dictate church choice. A careful look at theological stances, quality of liturgy and preaching and the way the church functions as the Body of Christ now, too often, take a backseat to those more personal choices.
The benefit that comes from these rather unfortunate developments is that the Episcopal Church is now made up of a much wider range of people than it was when I was a child. Because of the draw of the beauty of our liturgy, because of our tendency to be deeply involved in social issues (especially issues of social justice such as poverty and hunger), we have been fortunate enough to attract people from many, many denominations.
The Episcopal Church is increasingly a rich mix of former Roman Catholics, Methodists, Lutherans, non-denominational protestants, and Baptists. I thank God for all the people who have come to choose the Episcopal Church as their denominational home, and there is much we can learn from all other Christian traditions. However, for me, Episcopalians can learn a great deal from Baptists.
Here are some things I have noticed about former Baptists who have joined the Episcopal Church not just here at St. James, but at my former parish and at other parishes with which I have worked:
They come to church (not just when they feel like it, and not just when it is convenient, but every Sunday, and often Wednesdays, as well).
They take stewardship very seriously.
They make an annual pledge of financial support, and very often that pledge is far more aggressive than the pledges of most others in the parish.
They serve in ministries as they are needed. They agree to serve when asked. They volunteer to serve when they are not asked. They often serve in more than one ministry.
They attend parish events.
They take Christian education very, very seriously. Their children are always in Sunday School. They attend Adult Christian Education offerings. They believe that all members of the church are responsible for teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.
They read the Bible.
They are publicly open about their faith, and they are often our best evangelists.
Data without interpretation is worthless, however. So what can we determine from the data points above? I believe that we can determine that Baptists are trained in these church disciplines from a very young age. They are taught, both at church and at home, the primacy of place that their faith has in their lives. Yet, just because they learned it as children, does not mean that we cannot learn it as adults.
*** VERY IMPORTANT CAVEAT: Nothing I have said in the above paragraphs should be understood to mean that I do not realize that there are faithful and generous cradle Episcopalians, former Roman Catholics, former Methodists, former Lutherans, etc. in this and every Episcopal parish. It means, simply, that as a group, the former Baptists amongst us tend to demonstrate these attributes more than others.
When we gather to be joined in the Blessed Sacrament each week, we become one body, the Body of Christ. But we would be foolish not to take advantage of what we can learn from our brothers and sisters who have come to us from other denominations. In the end, anything we can do to build up the Body of Christ accrues to our own benefit, and more importantly, the benefit of the world.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Geoff+

OUTREACH MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES
Summer Ministry at the Frazee Center:
During the summer, the Frazee Dream Center sponsors Camp Frazee. The program runs for half days, 9 am-1 pm, during the last three weeks of June and the last three weeks of July. St. James has committed to provide lunch every Thursday: June 14, 21, and 28 and July 12, 19, and 26. Volunteers are needed from 11 am-1 pm; you may sign up for the entire shift or just one hour. In addition to serving meals, we will provide the food. So in addition to offering your time to serve the children of the Frazee Center, you may also contribute food items to make deli meat and cheese sandwiches or make a monetary donation to help with the purchase of the food. Please sign up on the bulletin board in the hall or contact John Kaup (241-1086 or john.kaup@furman.edu).
Summer Needs at United Ministries:
Food donations often decrease this time of year, but the needs increase as children are out of school. Please continue to bring non-perishable food items as you come to church and place them in the wooden box in the hallway upstairs. Thank you for your generosity.
Third Mission Trip to Alabama 2012
In April 2011 two F4 and three F3 category tornadoes swept through Dekalb County, Alabama, killing 33 people and destroying over 200 houses and damaging countless others. That year the Foothills Convocation of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina sent two teams to that area to help. Our volunteer contact tells us that he still has over 170 requests for help. This year the Foothills Convocation has sent two teams--one in March, the other in April. The dates for the third trip are June 17-22. The cost is $100 plus a share of carpool gas. All ages and genders are welcome. If you are interested, please contact Al Hipp, Foothills Convocational Deacon, at thomashipp@att.net.
Stop Hunger Now
All proceeds from the recent jazz concert are going toward the ministry of Stop Hunger Now (SHN). SHN is an international hunger relief agency that has been fulfilling its commitment to end hunger for more than 12 years. Since 1998, SHN has provided more than $70 million dollars worth of direct aid and 34 million meals to 72 countries worldwide. SHN created its meal packaging program in 2005, and perfected an assembly process that combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix, including 21 essential vitamins and minerals, into small meal packets. Each meal costs only 25 cents. The food stores easily, has a shelf-life of five years and transports quickly. The packaging operation is mobile (i.e. it can go wherever volunteers are located) and can be adapted to accommodate as few as 25 and as many as 500 volunteers at a time. The use of volunteers for product packaging has resulted in an extremely cost-effective operation while, at the same time, increasing awaren
ess of global hunger and food insecurity issues across a broad cross-section of the US population. For more information, visit the SHN website, www.stophungernow.org. St. James plans to host a meal-packaging event on Sunday, July 15, following the 11:00 service.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Note to Parents:
The infant nursery is undergoing some improvements to better serve our little ones. For the next few weeks, infants and their nursery workers should go to the larger nursery room at the end of the hall. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Nursery Ministry:
St. James needs more caregivers to help with our little ones (age 0-4) during the 9:00 and 11:00 services and during Sunday School. If you would like to serve, please sign the sheet in the foyer and indicate at which service(s) you are available. If you have questions, please contact Christina Harrell (ctharrell96@gmail.com, 420-3137). Thank you!
Parish Meeting
This Sunday, June 10, following the 11:00 service.
The purpose of the meeting is to learn more about and discuss one of the issues facing the General Convention of the Episcopal Church that will be held in July. At this General Convention a vote will be taken regarding the trial use of liturgies for the blessing of same-gender relationships. At the meeting Fr. Geoff will give an introduction covering the history of this issue in the Episcopal Church and explain the details of what trial use means when voted on by General Convention and the polity of our denomination, explaining how General Convention functions and how decisions are reached. After that, he will open the floor to questions and conversation.
Summer Music Opportunities:
With the childrens, youth, and adult choirs on summer rehearsal break, parishioners who are not officially 'in the choir' are invited to sing or play a short musical piece during the offertory at the 9 and 11 am Sunday services. The music at the offertory is part of the congregations offering of praise to God, and as such it forms an important part of the liturgy. A calendar with available dates and times is posted outside the choir room please help us fill these dates.
New Contribution Options Coming:
St. James will soon offer automatic bank draft and credit card payment options for making contributions. Enrollment information will be announced in the bulletin and eNotes when these options become available.
Youth Minister Returns June 19:
We welcome our Youth Minister, Rob Coulston, back to St. James following his internship at the monastery in Boston. You may contact him when he returns at 864-244-6358 (ext. 303) or youth@stjamesgreenville.org.
Vacation Bible School: The Miracles of Jesus
June 24-28, 5:30-8:00 pm
Join us as we learn about the miracles of Jesus and how we can impact the fight against hunger in America. Participants are asked to bring non-perishable food items each night for local food banks. VBS will also have a nickel collection. For each nickel brought, the Society of St. Andrew (our VBS mission project) can provide a pound of potatoes to our nations poor. Please sign up in the foyer to register your child (age 4 grade 5) or to indicate that you can help. Dinner will be served each evening at 5:30. Cookie donations are welcomed. Contact Christi Jones-McNeill (294-7163 or cmcneill7163@charter.net).

SERVANTS IN WORSHIP
**Please note: If you cannot serve when scheduled, please find a substitute.
Finding Subs Each person serving as a Servant in Worship will receive an email when they are scheduled to serve. The easiest way to get a sub is to click on the "request a sub" space on that email. The request goes out to everyone in that ministry. An email will be sent to the person who accepts as well as the person who made the request. If no one responds, the person needing a sub will need to go to the rosters and contact someone directly.
If you have questions about scheduling (including username and password information), please contact Susan Preusse at servants@stjamesgreenville.org.
