Split is the largest city on the Dalmatian coast, and its genesis is from the walled palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian (245 CE 316 CE). He served as emperor from 284 CE until his abdication in 305 CE. Diocletian was the emperor who called for and oversaw the last and most severe of the ten great Christian persecutions by the Roman Empire. His palace, which covers an area of approximately 40,000 square meters (nearly ten acres), was both a walled fortress and his retirement home. Half of the fortress was dedicated to housing the legion of Roman soldiers that served as his body guard, and the other half was living quarters, meeting rooms and kitchens. Near the center of the fortress, Diocletian had a grand tomb built for himself and set a temple to the Roman gods on top of it. When Christianity came to be a political power, Diocletians tomb was desecrated, his body exhumed, and, while no one can be sure of what happened to his body, local lore says that his remains were thrown into the Adriatic. The temple on top of the tomb was then consecrated a church and remains so to this day. During our tour of Diocletians palace, our tour guide, a local Splitonian (Splitite? Spliter?) took us into the church, told us the story behind it and then said, And so we can say, this is the oldest church in the world. I was a bit surprised by those words. I could not have told you where the oldest church in the world was, but I was willing to bet that Split, Croatia had never appeared in my church history notes from seminary. I was intrigued, however, by her phrasing. And so we can say I can say that St. James is the oldest church in the world, but that wouldnt make it true. (For those of you who are now wondering where the oldest church in the world is, I direct you to your favorite internet search engine. Let me issue the caveat, however, that you will need to set aside several hours or days to wade through thousands of sites that make vigorous arguments for their favorite church, archeological dig or Christian denomination.) While the parish of St. James is not the oldest church in the world, each of you is a member of the oldest church in the world. How can this paradox be? It is so because the Church is not a building, nor a place nor a denomination. The Church is the Body of which Jesus Christ is the Head and of which all baptized persons are members. The Church is the community of the New Covenant. It is called the People of God, the New Israel, a holy nation, a royal priesthood and the pillar and ground of truth. (Book of Common Prayer pg 854). Nowhere in Holy Scripture is the concept of the Church ever to be confused with any particular building. We are a spiritual body. We are not palaces, nor tombs, nor cathedrals. The Church is not a particular place. We are an eternal community of all baptized people, dead, alive and yet to be born. The Church is not windows, nor doors, nor walls. We are the oldest church in the world because there is only one church in the world. While humans have found ways to separate from one another, in the eyes of God we are all one. I do not mind that the people of Split, Croatia have found an interesting way to promote their beautiful city, and I do not particularly mind that people have, over the centuries, decided to group themselves by forms of worship imposed by human rules. I am not concerned, as long as we all are ever mindful that There is one Body and one Spirit. There is one hope in Gods call to us. One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism. One God and Father of all. For centuries it has been the tradition for churches to mark the feast day of their patron saint with special liturgies and celebrations. On Sunday, July 25, we will keep that tradition in recognition of our patron, St. James. The first part of the celebration will be the presence of our guest preacher, The Right Revd Stacy F. Sauls, Bishop of Lexington, Kentucky. Bishop Sauls was unable to be here to ordain Mother Roxanne, and it was our great pleasure to find such an august event for him to have another opportunity to be with us. As many of you know, Bishop Sauls was Mother Roxannes sponsoring bishop, and he was my sponsoring rector when I began the discernment process for the priesthood. Following the 11:00 AM service, we hold a Parish Fellowship Luncheon in the Parish Life Center. This potluck event will be our feast for the Feast of St. James. Bishops Sauls will join us as will the people of St. Francis. This will be a wonderful opportunity to get to know our brothers and sisters in Christ from St. Francis before we begin to share our home and our church programs with them August 1. It is particularly fitting that the people of St. Francis join us for our patronal feast, as St. James is the patron saint of pilgrims. The loss of a worship space makes the people of St. Francis pilgrims in one of the truest and most difficult senses. It is incumbent upon us as the people of St. James, the one to whom pilgrims pray for intercession with God, that we serve and welcome pilgrims in our midst. Fr. We visited ports in the Adriatic, Aegean, Ionian and Cretan seas. We visited sites with historic significance as early as the Minoan culture, which was one of the first major cultures in the Greek archipelago, and as late as Dubrovnik, Croatia which suffered heavy bombardments in the Serbo-Croatian conflict of the 1990s. We traveled with people from America, Spain, Italy, England, France, Australia, Germany and many, many other countries. It was a trip that we planned several years ago, and I was happy to be able to give my daughters so many rich cultural experiences not only in the mix of people we met, but in the cuisine, architecture and the fabric of day-to-day life in other cultures. Of course, most of our visits were to islands and port cities that form a part of the Mediterranean ring. As I read and heard about the histories of these cities, islands and ports, it was fascinating that they seemed to fall into two distinct categories. The first were cities and city-states that spent the majority of their energy in repelling not only invaders (one child in the group with which we traveled heard about Venetian pirates so often that he was afraid to return to Venice at the end of the cruise) but also preventing people from other cultures from settling in and joining with their own. These places are now relative backwaters in the Mediterranean ring. The second category of places were cities and city-states that welcomed in other cultures, turned their sea-side locations into an advantage in that they encouraged trade with other places and incorporated new and useful ideas from these other cultures. These places are marked by a rich mix of architectures, religious sites and even linguistic mixtures in which cognates from far different languages are now parts of their everyday speech. These are the places that tended to thrive rather than decline as the world shifted around them. It was a fascinating lesson in how the world has been shaped over time. When people found out that I am an Episcopal priest, one of the first things they would say was, Tell me about your church. I was always quick to correct them that it is Gods church, not mine, and then I would go on to describe St. James to them. I found myself quoting our mission statement not because it was concise but because I believe it to be a wonderful description of who we truly are. St. James is, above all, a welcoming, caring community. We are dedicated to worship, outreach, fellowship and growth in the service of Christ. When asked for an example of that, I pointed to our newest development (or, in truth, an older development that has returned to the place of its creation), the inclusion of the St. Francis community at St. James as an act of welcoming, outreach and fellowship. In telling them about this, I shared with them the story of the year of hard work your vestry did in preparing for this, the great grace and generosity we found in the people of St. Francis in bringing their endowment and other income to us, and especially and above all the incredibly positive response I have received from you, the people of St. James. When things such as the St. Francis initiative are introduced in less healthy parishes, there is dissent and schism as an almost organic and knee-jerk reaction. I was proud to tell people that 100% of the e-mail, telephone and conversational feed-back I have received about this project has been not only positive, but also enlivened with a sense of excitement and joy. During my travels, as I pondered this phenomenon, this unprecedented univocal response, I realized that what the people of this church understand is what the people of those thriving Mediterranean cultures understood that change, integration and growth are constituents of one another. The more we integrate, the more we grow. The more we grow, the more we integrate new people. And integration and growth are defining elements of positive change. Change in cultures, churches and even in science is not the exception; it is the status quo. Church is change. Church brings about changes in our lives. Church brings about changes in our relationship with humankind. Church brings about changes in our relationship with God. And God, in Christ, came to change us, to transform us, to move us toward perfection through this life and the next. I imagine I bored more than a few people as I sang the praises of the people of St. James over the past two and a half weeks. But I hope those to whom I spoke took the good news of the people of St. James and our manifestation of the Good News of God in Christ back to their homes with them. JAMES For centuries it has been the tradition for churches to mark the feast day of their patron saint with special liturgies and celebrations. On Sunday, July 25, we will keep that tradition in recognition of our patron, St. James. The first part of the celebration will be the presence of our guest preacher, The Right Revd Stacy F. Sauls, Bishop of Lexington, Kentucky. Bishop Sauls was unable to be here to ordain Mother Roxanne, and it was our great pleasure to find such an august event for him to have another opportunity to be with us. As many of you know, Bishop Sauls was Mother Roxannes sponsoring bishop, and he was my sponsoring rector when I began the discernment process for the priesthood. Following the 11:00 AM service, we hold a Parish Fellowship Luncheon in the Parish Life Center. This potluck event will be our feast for the Feast of St. James. Bishops Sauls will join us as will the people of St. Francis. This will be a wonderful opportunity to get to know our brothers and sisters in Christ from St. Francis before we begin to share our home and our church programs with them August 1. It is particularly fitting that the people of St. Francis join us for our patronal feast, as St. James is the patron saint of pilgrims. The loss of a worship space makes the people of St. Francis pilgrims in one of the truest and most difficult senses. It is incumbent upon us as the people of St. James, the one to whom pilgrims pray for intercession with God, that we serve and welcome pilgrims in our midst. Fr. From my very first Sunday, St. James has felt like home to me. Hospitality is one of our gifts as a parish. We claim that gift in our mission statement: "St. James is, above all, a welcoming, caring community. One aspect of our hospitality is our name tags. The obvious benefit of wearing a name tag is that othersespecially newer folks like mecan learn names. Some of you may be saying, I hate to wear a name tag. Ill confess that Ive been a member of that group at times in my life, and Ive made excuses about messing up my clothes, or other such things. But I think there is a deeper reason that wearing a name tag makes us uncomfortable. When we put on a name tag, its an invitation. It lets others know that were approachable, that were open to a conversation. That can be a scary prospect. The other side of the equation is that the folks who come to worship at St. James for the first time often feel as scared and vulnerable as we do. Offering them a smile and a handshake are small things that can make a big differenceand wearing a name tag makes that easier to do. You may have noticed a change in some of the name tags on the board in the narthex. We are in the process of giving our name tags a fresh new look, featuring our new logo. Name tags should be available for all adults; if you dont see one for you, please add your name to the list on the table in the narthex. Geoff is out of town, Ive been given the opportunity to serve as guest writer for his weekly rectors message. It has been just over three months since I began serving at St. James. I am delighted to be part of this vibrant community and am enjoying getting to know you. One of the questions Im asked frequently is what did you do before you became a priest? The simple answer is that I spent over 25 years working in administrative positions in the church. After earning a Bachelors degree in Bible and a Master of Arts in Religion in Christian Education, I eventually wound up serving parishes of differing sizes in several denominations as secretary, office manager or parish administrator. (Dena and I have a lot in common!) These were wonderful, fulfilling years, but for most of them I had a sense that I might be called to other forms of ministry. Finally in 2003, the door opened for me to begin discernment for the priesthood and, as they say, the rest is history. The key to my story is this: I didnt work in the church for 25 years and then enter into ministry when I became ordained. In the catechism in the Book of Common Prayer, lay persons are identified as the first order of ministry. It says, The ministry of lay persons is to represent Christ and his Church; to bear witness to him wherever they may be; and, according to the gifts given them, to carry on Christ's work of reconciliation in the world; and to take their place in the life, worship, and governance of the Church. (Page 855) Each of us is ordained for ministry when we are baptized. We are called to use our unique personality and gifts to offer witness to Christ. Each of us is necessary and no ones call is better or higher than another. Ministry is about all of us working together to build the Kingdom of God. I am delighted that God has called me to join you here at St. James. God has work for us to do, and I look forward to all that lies ahead. How You Can Help the People of Fondwa, Haiti What you can do right now: 1) Decide to be a sponsor. You can sponsor a child in the St. Antione School for $25/month to provide 5 meals a week, daily vitamins, regular anti-parasite medication and yearly nutritional assessments. More than 300 students are unsponsored at this time. You can sponsor a teacher's salary/training for $85/month. There will be many future opportunities to travel to Haiti for relief work. There will be a need for both skilled and unskilled labor. JAMES For centuries it has been the tradition for churches to mark the feast day of their patron saint with special liturgies and celebrations. On Sunday, July 25, we will keep that tradition in recognition of our patron, St. James. The first part of the celebration will be the presence of our guest preacher, The Right Revd Stacy F. Sauls, Bishop of Lexington, Kentucky. Bishop Sauls was unable to be here to ordain Mother Roxanne, and it was our great pleasure to find such an august event for him to have another opportunity to be with us. As many of you know, Bishop Sauls was Mother Roxannes sponsoring bishop, and he was my sponsoring rector when I began the discernment process for the priesthood. Following the 11:00 AM service, we hold a Parish Fellowship Luncheon in the Parish Life Center. This potluck event will be our feast for the Feast of St. James. Bishops Sauls will join us as will the people of St. Francis. This will be a wonderful opportunity to get to know our brothers and sisters in Christ from St. Francis before we begin to share our home and our church programs with them August 1. It is particularly fitting that the people of St. Francis join us for our patronal feast, as St. James is the patron saint of pilgrims. The loss of a worship space makes the people of St. Francis pilgrims in one of the truest and most difficult senses. It is incumbent upon us as the people of St. James, the one to whom pilgrims pray for intercession with God, that we serve and welcome pilgrims in our midst. Fr. Special thanks to Christi McNeill for being the coordinator and helping to organize this experience of songs, science and crafts through the week. Camp Bob Please take a moment to read the letters from the children at the Frazee Dream Center whom we sponsored to attend Camp Bob. The letters are on the bulletin board near the water fountain. Attic Sale Report Wow!!! What a great week, thanks to our many volunteers (close to 50) and the most donations ever. We worked hard and had some fun; there was wonderful cooperation and socializing. Thank you, one and all!!! Our total net profit was $6406.50--$972.26 more than in 2009. 60% of the profit will go to outreach and 40% to projects here at St. James. Gail Tomkins African Team Ministries Craft Sale: July 11-18, 2010 St. James will be offering native crafts made for African Team Ministries after services on Sundays, July 11 & 18, and during the intervening week. The display will be set up in the main hallway. All proceeds from the sale benefit a mission of the Episcopal Church which provides literacy, health and training programs in East Africa. 2010 Altar Flower & Sanctuary Lamp Calendars: Please sign up on the calendars posted on the wall above the signup table in the hallway if you would like to provide flowers for the altar ($50) or the candle for the sanctuary lamp ($10). You will be contacted near the date regarding wording for the bulletin. Two individuals or families may share a week and split the cost. Available dates for Altar Flowers: August 1, 22, November 7. Summer Music Opportunities: With the childrens and adult choirs on their summer rehearsal break, parishioners are invited to sing or play a short musical piece during the offertory at the 9:00 and 11:00 AM Sunday services. The musical offering at the offertory is part of the congregations offering of praise to God, and it is an important part of the liturgy. One of the great strengths of this parish that was articulated over and over again and became a part of the new mission statement created by your vestry was a hunger for and devotion to outreach ministries. If we look back over the last six months, we can see just how vital that ministry has been. While there are too many outreach activities to list here, I do want to remark on three of them and congratulate all of you for the role you played and continue to play in making them a mark of what it means to be St. James Episcopal Church. First, in response to the hurricane that devastated the nation of Haiti, the leadership of this parish and individuals within the parish acted quickly and generously to do anything we could to help. The vestry determined that a portion of the surplus from last years budget (a hallmark of the great stewardship the people in the parish practice) should go directly to the diocesan fund to help the people of Haiti. When it came to the attention of the parish that two of our own Kathryn and Rimes McElveen - were involved in a ministry in Haiti and were each going to spend a week assisting the people in Fondwa, you all responded with generous gifts of clothing, shoes, school supplies, and countless other items. Extraordinary gifts to the discretionary fund made it possible to help cover the high cost of transportation for our people to go and serve, thereby making the concept of our parish being one body in Christ even more of a physical reality. In our own city, Alice and Ken Littlejohn brought to our attention the opportunity to send children from the Frazee Hope Center (an organization that serves inner-city children) to Camp Bob at Kanuga in the mountains of North Carolina. The opportunity to attend a place such as Camp Bob is one that few if any of these children would ever have. Our mens group, the St. Joseph Society, issued a challenge to the people of St. James in which they would match contributions dollar for dollar. Through your great generosity, we were able to raise the money necessary to send all of the eighteen children eligible to the camp. But we are about more than money, and Alice Littlejohn and Tempest Brevard, our youth minister, went with the children, having the opportunity to be in community with them and others, showing forth the unconditional love of Christ. Finally, within our own diocese, we are practicing the radical hospitality to which we are called by Christ by sharing our space with the people of St. Francis. This is outreach in its most wonderful form in that we will have the opportunity to meet and serve with our brothers and sisters in Christ, people with whom most of us would not have an opportunity to serve. And it is outreach in a wonderful form because it extends in both directions: we offer space and facilities to a vital worshipping community, and they offer the gift of their talents and the joy of more children in our midst. Alice Littlejohn reminded me that I told her that if the people doing the outreach are not changed every bit as much as the people to whom we are reaching out, then we are not doing outreach well. All of the outreach activities above, and perhaps especially that with St. Francis, are transformative for us. We are called by virtue of our baptism to be transformed more and more each day into the Body of Christ. It is by serving others that we are most quickly and powerfully recreated and made new in the image of Christ. I congratulate all of you for being people of integrity literally integrated people who live lives that reflect what we believe and what we say. I congratulate you all for your good work, your good spirit, and your willingness to show forth love without counting the cost, knowing that to love is to simply give unconditionally. Finally, I congratulate you all for living into the words of St. Paul who wrote, Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God--what is good and acceptable and perfect. There will be many future opportunities to travel to Haiti for relief work. There will be a need for both skilled and unskilled labor. If you are interested in being a part of a future mission team, please email or call Kathryn or Rimes McElveen. 2) Opportunities to financially support larger projects (school, guesthouse, medical clinic, or orphanage reconstruction; digging wells/cistern systems; building homes, etc.) As specific strategies are developed by the APF and partner organizations, there will be opportunities to support their efforts. On Sunday, July 25, we will keep that tradition in recognition of our patron, St. James. The first part of the celebration will be the presence of our guest preacher, The Right Revd Stacy F. Sauls, Bishop of Lexington, Kentucky. Bishop Sauls was unable to be here to ordain Mother Roxanne, and it was our great pleasure to find such an august event for him to have another opportunity to be with us. As many of you know, Bishop Sauls was Mother Roxannes sponsoring bishop, and he was my sponsoring rector when I began the discernment process for the priesthood. Following the 11:00 AM service, we hold a Parish Fellowship Luncheon in the Parish Life Center. This potluck event will be our feast for the Feast of St. James. Bishops Sauls will join us as will the people of St. Francis. This will be a wonderful opportunity to get to know our brothers and sisters in Christ from St. Francis before we begin to share our home and our church programs with them August 1. It is particularly fitting that the people of St. Francis join us for our patronal feast, as St. James is the patron saint of pilgrims. The loss of a worship space makes the people of St. Francis pilgrims in one of the truest and most difficult senses. It is incumbent upon us as the people of St. James, the one to whom pilgrims pray for intercession with God, that we serve and welcome pilgrims in our midst. -------------------- ANNOUNCEMENTS Communications Survey from St. James Episcopal Church Communications Task Force: We appreciate the excellent response to the survey. June 18, 2010 Dear Friends, Early this spring the vestry met in retreat to build in ourselves a spirit of servant leadership. Just about every member recalled the trepidation we all felt when asked to serve on the vestry. We all recognized that no one of us individually, or even collectively, knows what is best for St. James. We can only serve when we seek the grace of God and the efforts and input of every other member of the Body of Christ at St. James. The joining of our community with those at St. Francis will challenge us in many ways. The vestry, and the whole congregation, will deal with space utilization, budget, and social integration issues. While we have anticipated many of the potential problems in our planning meetings, we will certainly face more that we have not considered. The vestry is ready to face the challenges ahead. We ask the whole congregation to please share with your clergy or vestry the concerns and ideas you have. We cannot serve each other if we do not share and hear our mutual hopes and fears. When St. James and St. Francis come together as one body, and we overcome the challenges we are to face, we will all truly speak to the world about how God can reconcile all to Himself and to each other. It turned out she was his great-granddaughter. She had been born in Greensboro, and she lived the majority of her life in Atlanta. She knew she was dying, and she asked her family to move her to the nursing home in Greensboro so that she could be buried from the church her great-grandfather started. I went to her room and introduced myself. She looked up at me and said, Rite I, chanted, with incense and the Eucharist. I asked her what she meant, and she answered, My funeral. Rite I, chanted, with incense and the Eucharist. Thats it. Nothing else. I realized what a great gift this woman had given me after she died and I met her children. They wanted to incorporate funeral rituals from more religious and spiritual traditions than I can even number. Although she had been a life-long Episcopalian, they had migrated through religion after religion. Had this woman not given me such clear instructions as to what she wanted for her funeral, I would have been put in the very difficult pastoral position of trying to negotiate a funeral that would have satisfied all of them. I am confident that such a funeral liturgy doesnt exist. Part of stewardship is caring for our families and friends, and anything we can do to ease their pain and suffering when we die is an important part of stewardship. There are two specific things we can do to achieve this. The first thing we can do is ensure that we have executed advance directives, also known as a living will. This document makes known our wishes regarding the extent of healthcare we receive in the event that we are no longer able to communicate with our family and our doctors. Issues of life-support, nourishment, hydration and extreme medical interventions are addressed in these documents. They are available from your doctors, hospitals, attorneys and sometimes online. I cannot begin to express how much pain a family can be spared when a loved one has a properly executed advance directive. If we can save family members from having to make decisions immensely difficult decisions by making them ourselves, in advance, then we have practiced an act of stewardship and love. In my time as a hospital chaplain, I saw families rent apart when siblings differed on what, if any, steps should be taken and no advance directive was in place. If we truly care for our loved ones, we will all take steps to ensure that they never have to make such decisions for us. The second way we can be stewards of our loved ones at the time of our death is to have played an active role in the planning of our own funeral. Failure to do so puts an immense burden on our loved ones at the time of their greatest grief. Choosing which of our two funeral liturgies to use, choosing the scripture readings, hymns and making countless other decisions is a burden we can easily lift from the shoulders of those we leave behind. We have available for all parishioners via e-mail or hard copy in the office a funeral planning document. I strongly urge you to avail yourself of this service, and the clergy stand ready to assist you in filling out the form if you wish. The sad irony to me is that we do so much to prepare for the birth of a new family member. We prepare a nursery, we buy furniture and clothes and so many other things. Sometimes, even a new house is purchased. We relocate to be closer to specific schools, we set aside money in the hope that the child will someday go to college. And all of this with only nine months of advance notice. And although we are all aware that we will someday die, most of us never take the very few minutes to fill out two forms that can do so much to ease the pain of those we will leave behind. Just as we are called to be stewards of our own health as stewards of our families, we are called, also, to be stewards of death. Stewardship taking care of, protecting, providing for and loving those people and institutions that take care of, protect, provide and love us is what we are called to do as disciples of the Risen Christ. Baobab is a gigantic tree found in Africa that creates its own ecosystem. A baobab trees hollowed-out trunk, leaves, foliage, nectar, fruit, and bark provide basic life needs for many different creatures. For two months out of the year, when the rain falls and the grasses are green in the African Savannah, the baobab tree produces leaves and flowers. The enormous tree can grow to 98 feet tall and 36 feet wide. Baobab trees are one of the worlds oldest life forms. The baobab tree serves as a meeting place for many people to gather, discuss, and share stories. At Baobab Blast Vacation Bible School, the baobab tree is the central figurethe hub of activity, energy, and life. The baobab tree supports and invites community. A note from the Bishop to the people of St. James

Dear People of St. James: Word has come to me that you and the Mission Congregation of St. Francis, Greenville, have laid plans to join forces in common life, ministry, and mission. Even at this very early stage in my episcopate, I am familiar with the long journey on which the Diocesan Hispanic Mission in the Upstate has been; and I rejoice at the hopeful prospect of St. James and St. Francis working in a gospel partnership a partnership in which both communities will be strengthened, lives will be continually changed, and God will be glorified. Please know that I stand with you and the people of St. Francis as your Bishop -- as your partner -- in this mission and look forward to walking with you in the time ahead. Thank you for your willingness to put faithful meaning into our common Diocesan purpose. As a result, we most certainly are: One Body. One Mission. Changing Lives.
