Summer Stewardship Opportunity: Frazee Kids at Camp Bob

Dear People of St. James,

Four years ago, our parish became a sponsoring organization to provide camp scholarships to children at the Frazee Dream Center in downtown Greenville. Camp Bob (founded by Kanuga in 1998) provides an uplifting summer experience to children who otherwise might not be able to attend camp. For many of these children, it is their first experience in the natural outdoors. The Camp Bob experience offers a week of Faith, Hope, and Love to children.

Our ministry to the children at the Frazee Center has grown as many of us make monthly visits to prepare a meal or offer homework help. Some may even mentor a special child there on a weekly basis. I can tell from my conversations with the Frazee kids that these interactions are meaningful and appreciated. I also know that they talk about Camp Bob all year round and anticipate it with excitement.

This summer, Camp Bob has reserved 20 spaces for Frazee kids for the week of July 22-27. They have been offered a 6-night stay instead of the usual 5-night stay. The price for each camper is $351. All of us at St. James have an opportunity to make a donation in any amount to the Camp Bob scholarship fund.

In addition to offering our financial support, we may send adult volunteers to accompany the kids and assist the Camp Bob counselors. I went as a volunteer the first year. It is a great experience for the “young at heart.” Please let me know if you are interested (alkenlj@charter.net).

Vacation Bible School: Superheroes of the Faith, June 23-27, 5:30-8:00 pm.
Join us as we learn about the Superheroes of the Faith and how we can impact the fight against hunger in America. Each night participants are asked to bring non-perishable food items for local food banks and are also asked to bring dimes. Each dime allows the Society of St. Andrew (our VBS mission project) to provide 1.5 pounds of potatoes to those who are hungry. Please sign up in the foyer to register your child (age 3–grade 5) or to indicate that you can help. GAIHN Week: July 14-21
St. James hosts Greenville Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (GAIHN) July 14-21.
We will need folks for set up, meal preparation, evening activities, overnight hosting, and more. Training and support will be provided. You may sign up as an individual, family, or group. Adult Christian Education Class, “I Will, With God’s Help,”
Sundays through July 7, 10:10 am.
Please join Mother Roxanne for this discussion of the five questions of Christian Discipleship from our Baptismal Covenant. The questions, found on page 304 in the Book of Common Prayer, describe how we are to live as followers of Christ. We will explore together what they mean for us. Adults and high school students are invited to attend. The class is especially appropriate for those who wish to be confirmed during the Bishop’s visit on July 14. If you have questions, please contact Mother Roxanne, 244-6358, ext. 202, or associaterector@stjamesgreenville.org. The class will meet in Room 229.

Confirmation:
The Rt. Rev’d Andrew Waldo, Bishop of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina, will make his Episcopal Visitation to St. James on Sunday, July 14. The Rite of Confirmation will take place on that day. If you or a member of your family would like to be confirmed, please contact Mother Roxanne. In our diocese youth must have begun their junior year in high school to be eligible for confirmation. Classes will be set by the people involved.

Stop Hunger Now:
The jar is back! We are raising money to fund our next meal packaging event which will take place on Sunday, September 8 following the 11:00 service. Remember, each quarter buys one meal. No gift is too small.

Sound Team Ministry:
The Sound Team Ministry needs members. They record the 11:00 Sunday services for distribution to homebound members and so the sermon can be posted on the website. Please contact Ed Snape at esnape@bellsouth.net, or 269-8808 with questions or to join the team.

St. James has reserved Shelter #1 at Pleasant Ridge Park in northern Greenville County for our covered-dish picnic on Sunday, June 2. Pleasant Ridge is located just off Hwy 11. We will meet around 1:00 pm for food and fun. Plates, cups, napkins and some beverages will be provided. Please bring a dish which serves 8-10 people to share. Important note: Services at St. James will take place at the regular times on that day – 7:45, 9:00 and 11:00.

Vacation Bible School: Superheroes of the Faith, June 23-27, 5:30-8:00 pm.
Join us as we learn about the Superheroes of the Faith and how we can impact the fight against hunger in America. Each night participants are asked to bring non-perishable food items for local food banks and are also asked to bring dimes. Each dime allows the Society of St. Andrew (our VBS mission project) to provide 1.5 pounds of potatoes to those who are hungry. Confirmation:
The Rt. Rev’d Andrew Waldo, Bishop of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina, will make his Episcopal Visitation to St. James on Sunday, July 14. The Rite of Confirmation will take place on that day. If you or a member of your family would like to be confirmed, please contact Mother Roxanne. In our diocese youth must have begun their junior year in high school to be eligible for confirmation. Classes will be set by the people involved.

GAIHN Week: St. James hosts Greenville Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (GAIHN) July 14-21.
We will need folks for set up, meal preparation, evening activities, overnight hosting, and more. Training and support will be provided. You may sign up as an individual, family, or group. Annual Parish Picnic at our new location!
St. James has reserved Shelter #1 at Pleasant Ridge Park in northern Greenville County for our covered-dish picnic on Sunday, June 2. Pleasant Ridge is located just off Hwy 11. We will meet around 1:00 pm for food and fun. Plates, cups, napkins and some beverages will be provided. Please bring a dish which serves 8-10 people to share. Important note: Services at St. James will take place at the regular times on that day – 7:45, 9:00 and 11:00.

Annual Parish Picnic at our new location!
St. James has reserved Shelter #1 at Pleasant Ridge Park in northern Greenville County for our covered-dish picnic on Sunday, June 2. Pleasant Ridge, located just off Hwy 11, is approximately the same distance from St. James as it is from Faith Memorial Chapel. We will meet around 1:00 pm for food and fun. Please note: Services at St. James will take place at the regular times on that day – 7:45, 9:00 and 11:00.

Graduate Recognition:
If you or someone in your family will be graduating this Spring, please contact the parish office at admin@stjamesgreenville.org or 244-6358 by Wednesday, June 5. We would like to know the graduate’s name, degree bestowed and field of study or future plans.

Annual ECW Attic Sale: Saturday, June 15, 8:00 am - 1:00 pm.

Confirmation:
The Rt. Rev’d Andrew Waldo, Bishop of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina, will make his Episcopal Visitation to St. James on Sunday, July 14. The Rite of Confirmation will take place on that day. If you or a member of your family would like to be confirmed, please contact Mother Roxanne. In our diocese youth must have begun their junior year in high school to be eligible for confirmation. Classes will be set by the people involved.

St. James Day School is now accepting applications for the 2013-14 school year. Classes are offered for children ages 1, 2, 3 and 4. For more information, please visit www.stjamesgreenville.org or call Beth Renninger, St. James School Director, at 232-4877.

Memorial Opportunities:

Announcements

United Thank Offering (UTO) Spring Ingathering: Next Sunday, May 12.
UTO is a ministry, which began in 1889 by the Women's Auxiliary of the
Episcopal Church, that provides a way for men, women, and children of the
Episcopal Church to give daily thanks to God. The offering is used for
projects at home and abroad to support grants for missions and ministry. The
discipline starts at home by dropping coins into a Blue Box, each time
prayers of thanksgiving are offered. You may pick up a Blue Box from the
table in the foyer. Envelopes are also available in the pews for your kind
donations.

Frazee Dream Center Ministry Opportunity:
The Frazee Dream Center is a program for under resourced children in the
downtown Greenville area. St. James will provide homework assistance this
Thursday, May 9, from 4:00-5:00 pm (6+ volunteers). Signup sheets are on the
bulletin board in the hallway. Contact John Kaup (241-1086 or

United Thank Offering (UTO) Spring Ingathering: Sunday, May 12.
UTO is a ministry, which began in 1889 by the Women’s Auxiliary of the Episcopal Church, that provides a way for men, women, and children of the Episcopal Church to give daily thanks to God. The offering is used for projects at home and abroad to support grants for missions and ministry. The discipline starts at home by dropping coins into a Blue Box, each time prayers of thanksgiving are offered. You may pick up a Blue Box from the table in the foyer. Envelopes are also available in the pews for your kind donations.

Parish Fellowship Weekend: May 24-26.
You are invited to join others from the parish at Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville, NC for an unplugged weekend of campfires, rocking chairs, fishing, swimming and hiking. Rates for the weekend (Fri. supper–Sun. lunch): Adult (19 years and up) $175; Youth (10-18 years) $95; Child (5-9 years) $56. Confirmation:
The Rt. Rev’d Andrew Waldo, Bishop of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina, will make his Episcopal Visitation to St. James on Sunday, July 14. The Rite of Confirmation will take place on that day. If you or a member of your family would like to be confirmed, please contact Mother Roxanne. In our diocese youth must have begun their junior year in high school to be eligible for confirmation. Classes will be set by the people involved.

Search Committee Update:

Dear Friends:

This past Wednesday your Search Committee submitted three candidates to the Vestry for selection as your new rector. Our committee unanimously feels that any one of these three would work very well as the leader of our parish. We are confident that the Vestry will make the best decision for St. James. As the Vestry moves forward with the selection process, I would like to personally thank all of those that served on the Search Committee. Everyone on our committee of 16 was very committed and contributed much in the process, with the majority taking weekend road trips to visit candidates and their churches. We have prayed for guidance for both our parish community and for those who may be called to St. James. Our prayer is that Christ’s will be done.
