Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

I am sorry to report that on Monday, February 6, our sister in Christ, Peggy Robbins, passed away. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 9 at 2:30pm at St. James. The visitation with the family will take place on Wednesday, February 8 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home located at 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC.

May she rest in peace and rise in glory.

--> Deepening Your Relationship With Christ (February 5 & 19)
We will examine what it means to have a relationship with Jesus Christ and how we can experience that relationship on a deeper level. We will look at our relationship with Christ through many different lenses including scripture, prayer, worship and sacrament, service and stewardship. Led by Father Geoff and Mother Roxanne; meets in Room 229.
--> “Modern Science and Christian Faith: Exploring the Connections and Tensions.” (February 12)
Three members of St. James, who also teach at Furman--Vicky Turgeon, Biology; Jeff Petty, Chemistry; and John Shelley, Religion--will launch and facilitate the discussion; meets in room 229.

Teachers are needed for the March, April and May sessions of Sunday School for children in Kindergarten–Grade 5. Teachers are responsible for one lesson which they teach three times to three age groups. Curriculum is provided. Children’s Chapel Leaders Needed:
Children’s Chapel offers the Liturgy of the Word for children in Kindergarten–Grade 3. Leaders tell a Bible story related to the lessons of the day. Children return to the service during the Peace. Contact Mother Roxanne (assistantrector@stjamesgreenville.org, 864-244-6358, ext. 203).

Forward Day by Day devotion booklets for Feb/Mar/Apr are available now. Cost is $1.25 for regular and large print editions. Pick up yours today from the table in the foyer.

Worship on Wednesday (WoW):
The next WoW will meet on Wednesday, February 15. Youth in grades 6-12 are invited to the Celtic Evening Eucharist at 6:30 pm followed by dinner and discussion at 7 pm. We’ll conclude at 7:45. If you need a ride, please contact the church office. WoW will meet every other Wednesday. Mark your calendar for these dates in the next few weeks: February 29, March 14 and March 28.

Annual Oyster Roast:
Saturday, February 18, 2012, 4:30 pm

Bena Dial Scholarship:
High school seniors interested in applying for the Bena Dial scholarship can get an application from Robyn Harmon (609-6035). Deadline is March 1.

St. James Day School:
Registration for the 2012-2013 school year has begun. We offer classes for children ages 12 months to 4 years. Sessions are held 2, 3 and 4 days per week according to the child’s age. Cost is $130/mo. for 2 days, $160/mo. for 3 days and $200/mo. for 4 days. Church members receive a 10% discount. “Through the Valley” is the Bereavement Support Group run by Lutheran Hospice. The first meeting of this 10-week group will be Tuesday, February 14th, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. The target audience is adults who have suffered an adult loss, including a spouse, a parent, or a grown son or daughter. The group will meet at the Lutheran Hospice office (429 North Main Street, Suite 3, Greenville). Contact Cindy Abrams at 848-1777 for information and to sign up.

Camp Gravatt is taking camper registrations and staff applications for summer 2012. Camp sessions are available for boys and girls entering first through twelfth grades. At Camp Gravatt campers make friends, share in an affirming Christmas community, experience unconditional love, and have fun! Activities include archery, arts-and-crafts, canoeing, environmental education, swimming, challenge course, campfires, singing, Episcopal worship, Bible study and more. Stewardship Ministry at St. James

Thank you for your generous response to our pledge campaign during the final months of 2011 and to Martin Darby who led our stewardship efforts. To date pledges for 2012 show a 2.49% increase over 2011 pledges. Of the 178 pledges received, 32 are new pledges while 45 pledging units raised their pledges from last year. Seventy-six pledges are the same, and 25 pledges are down from 2011. Current pledges received are still a little short of the amount needed for 2012. The Finance Committee meets in early February to finalize the budget. If you have not pledged and would like to do so, or if you are able to raise your 2012 pledge, please contact Dena Veazey or a member of the Stewardship Leadership Team very soon.

In his book More than Money: Portraits of Transformative Stewardship, Patrick McNamara* describes successful stewardship congregations; St. James exhibits many of these characteristics. We continue our journey to live into a broad and deep understanding of stewardship—knowing all that we have—time, talent, and treasure—are gifts from God. As Christians living into our baptismal vows, we are called to return our lives to God. Father Geoff, Mother Roxanne, and Karen Eshelman nurture our growth through worship, Bible study, pastoral letters, and Christian formation classes; our eagerness for self-giving emerges from a passion for the gospel. At St. James, not only are we asked to give generously of our financial resources, but also we are asked to give of our time and our talents. In the midst of busy lives, intentionally committing our time and our talents (teaching Sunday School or Children’s Chapel, serving our GAIHN families, singing in the choir) often seems more da
unting than writing a check, but these commitments are faithful stewardship.

The work of our Stewardship Leadership Team is to provide guidance and encouragement in sharing time, talent, and treasure. Through a series of quarterly newsletters, our leadership team will provide a stewardship timeline for 2012, plan events to focus on stewardship, and communicate and celebrate our growth in the area of stewardship. Those serving on the leadership team for 2012 are listed below; Anne Shelley currently serves as Chair. If you have questions, concerns, and/or suggestions for the work of the team, or if you would like to be more directly involved in stewardship, please communicate with any or all of us. Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Those of you who were here for Christmas services will remember the cards we distributed in the bulletins, asking both visitors and members alike to give us their contact information and to indicate their interests in various things at the church. One area of the card asked people to let us know if they wanted to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ.

Sixty percent of the cards we received had that box checked. While they may not sound like a particularly high percentage given the question, you must take into account that that type of language is relatively new in the Episcopal Church. “Deepening my relationship with Christ,” is a phrase that indicates a personal relationship, and we have been, until recently, a church that has been far more concerned with our corporate relationship with Christ.

I am encouraged that sixty percent of the cards returned indicated that people want to deepen their relationship with Christ. I am encouraged that that sort of language is becoming part of our lexicon. I am encouraged that as a parish we are becoming more and more aware of the need to know Christ in a way that will allow us to more easily articulate that relationship with others. We cannot, after all, introduce others to that which we do not already know.

In response to this information, the data that reflects a hunger for a deeper relationship with Christ, Mother Roxanne and I will be teaching a five-week Sunday School class entitled “Deepening Your Relationship With Christ.” Over the next five weeks, we will discuss different ways to have a deeper and growing relationship with our Lord and Savior. We will talk about prayer, scripture, worship and sacraments, service and stewardship.

I truly hope that this is a class that will sow the seeds for participation in our Bible study groups (schedule to be announced in February) as well as give us an on-going forum in which we can bring others to a deeper relationship with Jesus, a relationship that others will come to see and know is one that truly gives life, truly gives hope, truly makes us the body we aspire to be.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

New Adult Christian Education Class: Deepening Your Relationship With Christ.
Begins this Sunday, January 22 and continues through Sunday, February 19.
Over a five-week period we will examine what it means to have a relationship with Jesus Christ and how we can experience that relationship on a deeper level. We will look at our relationship with Christ through many different lenses including scripture, prayer, worship and sacrament, service and stewardship. Led by Father Geoff and Mother Roxanne. Meets in Room 229

Teach Our Children:
Teachers are needed for the February session of Sunday School for children in Kindergarten–Grade 5. Teachers are responsible for one lesson which they teach three times to three age groups. Children’s Chapel Leaders Needed:
Children’s Chapel offers the Liturgy of the Word for children in Kindergarten–Grade 3. Leaders tell a Bible story related to the lessons of the day. Children return to the service during the Peace. Contact Mother Roxanne (assistantrector@stjamesgreenville.org, 864-244-6358, ext. 203).

Compline:
Saying Goodnight to God
Sunday, January 22, at 7:30 pm.
When you come to Compline, you see a darkened and candlelit church--you walk into the silent room--you hear the traditional evening chants and prayers. You find a moment of peace and remember that Christ, the center and source of all that is, will be with you during the busy week to come.

GAIHN Ministry: January 29 – February 5.

Worship on Wednesday (WoW):
The next WoW will meet on Wednesday, February 1. Youth in grades 6-12 are invited to the Celtic Evening Eucharist at 6:30 pm followed by dinner and discussion at 7 pm. We’ll conclude at 7:45. If you need a ride, please contact the church office. WoW will meet every other Wednesday. Mark your calendar for these dates in the next few weeks: February 15, February 29, March 14 and March 28.

Diocesan High School Youth Conference:
February 3-5, 2012.

- Emergency Assistance needs individual packages of powdered milk; canned meats: beef stew, Treet, tuna and mackerel; canned soup; and dry beans.

2012 Altar Flower & Sanctuary Lamp Calendars:
Please sign up on the calendars posted on the wall in the narthex if you would like to provide flowers for the altar ($50) or the candle for the sanctuary lamp ($15) during 2012. You will be contacted near the date regarding wording for the bulletin. Two individuals or families may share a single week for either.

St. James Day School:
Registration for the 2012-2013 school year has begun. We offer classes for children ages 12 months to 4 years. Sessions are held 2, 3 and 4 days per week according to the child’s age. Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

It is often in the crucible of hard times (whether extended or brief crises) that we truly see the Church for what it is. We gather as a community every Sunday (yes, there are actually people who come to church every week), and more often than not, things go very smoothly.

Occasionally, however, something happens that causes us to break the pattern of our shared lives, and it is in those moments that we see what it truly means to be not only a community but a church family.

Last week at the 7:45 service, just before the end of the Eucharistic Prayer, one of our family members fainted and hit her head in the resulting fall. I stopped the liturgy and went down into the pews where several people were caring for the person who had fallen ill. It became clear that professional assistance would be needed, and a call was made to 911. As we waited for the EMTs to arrive, I saw the following things.

Several people made sure that the person was made comfortable while we waited, with one woman resting the fallen person’s head in her lap as she lay in the pew. Some gave their coats to serve as blankets and pillows. Several people made sure that the way was clear for the EMTs, some opening doors and others waiting outside so there would be no confusion as to where the emergency was. Across the aisle, I saw several people in prayer. Others hurried to get water and other things to make the person more comfortable. Some people made sure that the woman’s family was contacted. I stood next to her, trying to be what we refer to in pastoral care as a “non-anxious presence,” (I’ve often thought of this as being a fancy way of saying, “Just don’t do something, stand there.”) Mother Roxanne came down from the chancel and anointed the woman with oil.

It was moving to see everyone doing something – prayer is, as you know, actually doing something, lifting up a person into the presence of God and calling on God to be with that person in their suffering. No one panicked, no one over-functioned, no one took on the role of back-seat expert. Everyone played a role in making sure that the woman was comfortable in mind, body and spirit. And everyone waited patiently.

After the EMTs took the woman out of the church, I was left with a small liturgical/theological question: do I pick up from where I left off in the Eucharist Prayer, do I start all over again or do I find another way to proceed with Holy Communion. I chose to say a public prayer for the woman and then continued with the Breaking of the Bread. It was a Communion that was palpably different in that we all had a visceral sense of what it meant to be joined with one another through Christ.

I am confident that this same scene would have been played out regardless of what service it took place in. We are a community, we are a family, and I am proud that all of you know how to and are willing to care for one another. Would the same scene have been played out in some other setting, a grocery store, a public street, an office? I am sure it would have been. But that is incidental, because I am not sure it would have been played out as seamlessly and with such a sense of the Holy in some other places of worship.

On this, the third anniversary of my coming to you as your rector, I am proud of all of you – proud of your care for one another, proud of your care for those beyond these walls, proud of your sense of the intersection of action and prayer, your awareness of the Holy in the events of everyday life.

I am proud of you, and I as look to the future, my goal is to serve you as wonderfully as you serve one another.

GAIHN Help Needed: January 29 – February 5.
You can help provide fellowship and hospitality to homeless families this month. St. James will be assisting our partners at Northside United Methodist Church as they host families from Greenville Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (GAIHN). We need dinner teams for three nights that week as well as strong hands to help set up and break down during their arrival and departure. Dinner teams will be contacted to coordinate the menus. Epiphany Celebration

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

I write to remind you that tomorrow evening, January 6 at 6:30pm we will celebrate the last of the 12 days of Christmas, the Feast of the Epiphany.

We will begin with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist at 6:30pm followed by the Burning of the Greens in front of the church. The Burning of the Greens is tradition of the ancient Celtic Church, and the bonfire symbolizes the light of Christ being revealed to the gentiles as it was when the wise men visited Jesus 12 days after his birth.

After the Burning of the Greens we will go to the Parish Life Center for an Epiphany Feast. Please bring something to share for dinner, and lest anyone worry that they do not have time (or in my case, the talent) to cook, a bucket of chicken or something pre-cooked from your favorite store or restaurant is always a great choice.

If you are bringing your tree or other greens, please place them on the stack in the middle of the parking circle.

RECTOR’S MESSAGE

December 30, 2011

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

As some of you may remember, I sent a rector’s message about New Year’s resolutions at the time of the Church’s New Year – the first Sunday of Advent. Now, as we enter the final hours of 2011, we are besieged by lists of the top events of the past year in every imaginable category: films, hard news, natural disasters, songs (some of which sound remarkably like natural disasters to me), television shows, politics, political blunders (those two might be redundant), sports (including a disturbing trend in the increase of “competitive eating” events), technological innovations, fashion, business successes, business failures, and the list of these lists could go on for pages.

I enjoy looking at what is being listed, but I rarely read the actual lists. My taste in films, music, television shows and sports rarely coincides with what is on the lists. As a Canadian unable to vote in the United States, following politics too closely always seems like watching NASCAR just to see the wrecks. I have no discernable fashion sense (black with a white collar 99% of the time, camo for the very few days I was able to go hunting this Fall), and a technological innovation to me would be a computer that worked every time I turned it on.

The existence of these top ten retrospectives of the past twelve months has, however, inspired me to ask a question of myself and of each of you: What would you list as your top ten faith moments as a Christian during 2011?

This strikes me as an interesting way to take an inventory of your spiritual life. The place to start, I suppose, is to ask if you really understand the question. Can you name ten moments over the past twelve months in which you felt as if you were truly behaving as a Christian, or truly in a relationship with Jesus Christ or truly in conversation with God through prayer?

These are only three marks of a faith-based life. There are countless others. Is your relationship with God such that you understand financial stewardship to be an act of faith rather than an act of fiscal support? Is your relationship with Jesus Christ such that you know his story, know the arc of the Gospels, can you insert yourself into those narratives in a way that lifts you up? Do you strive to live in imitation of Christ, to live the life of a servant, to love others as Christ loves us? Can you recite the five questions of Christian Discipleship found in our Baptismal Covenant? Can you remember times during the past year that you strived to live out those vows?

Take a moment this weekend and list your own top ten faith moments. It may change the way you live in 2012.

Sharing of Christmas Breads
Sunday, January 1, 2012
On the Sunday after Christmas St. James traditionally hosts a special coffee hour at which we share our favorite Christmas breads with one another. You are invited to bring a plate of goodies to share with the parish on that day. The services will take place at the regular times: 7:45, 9:00 & 11:00 am.

The Epiphany Burning of the Greens
On Friday, January 6, 2012, the Feast of the Epiphany, we will continue the tradition of this ancient celebration for the Church. Following the 6:30 Evening Eucharist, we will gather outside for the Burning of the Greens. It has been a tradition in the Celtic churches to bring the greens used to decorate the church and houses (Christmas trees, wreaths and garlands) and burn them as a visible symbol of the meaning of the Feast of Epiphany, the revelation of the light of the Christ Child to the Gentiles through the arrival of the Magi. Come and celebrate the last of the twelve days of Christmas with the Epiphany Eucharist and the Burning of the Greens. Afterwards we will hold a covered dish Epiphany Feast in the Parish Life Center.
