OUTREACH MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES

Third Mission Trip to Alabama 2012
In April 2011 two F4 and three F3 category tornadoes swept through Dekalb County, Alabama, killing 33 people and destroying over 200 houses and damaging countless others. That year the Foothills Convocation of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina sent two teams to that area to help. Our volunteer contact tells us that he still has over 170 requests for help. This year the Foothills Convocation has sent two teams--one in March, the other in April. The dates for the third trip are June 17-22. The cost is $100 plus a share of carpool gas. All ages and genders are welcome. If you are interested, please contact Al Hipp, Foothills Convocational Deacon, at thomashipp@att.net.

Ministry Opportunity — Serve at the Frazee Center:
For several years, St. James has provided funding to send students from the Frazee Center to Camp Bob at Kanuga. We have now increased our involvement with those students as we provide dinner for them two Thursdays each month. The work is easy and requires no special training or expertise. We serve dinner and spend time with the children. All are welcome to serve. It’s a great opportunity for families to minister together. Hours for our ministry are 4:00–6:30 pm, and you can come for any part of that time. The last date before the summer schedule is May 24. More information and sign up sheets are available on the Frazee Bulletin Board in the main hallway upstairs or you may contact John Kaup (241-1086 or john.kaup@furman.edu).

St. James Sound Team would like to train more operators to control microphone levels and make CD recordings of 11:00 am services (easily learned). Please consider this ministry and contact Ed Snape (269-8808 or esnape@bellsouth.net). We would also like to have sound people at other service times. Sound Team members provide congregation members with assisted listening devices on request. CDs are distributed to our members who are homebound or hospitalized.

St. James Day at Faith Memorial Chapel - Enjoy a Great Tradition:
--> Service: On Sunday, June 3, 2012, you are invited to join a pilgrimage of people from St. James to Faith Memorial Chapel in Cedar Mountain, NC. The service of Morning Prayer starts at 11:00 am. Father Geoff will be the guest preacher, and our organist and members of the choir will take part in the service.
--> The drive to Faith Chapel is a beautiful mountain drive past Caesar’s Head and the entrance to Camp Greenville. It is about a one-hour drive depending upon traffic (directions at www.FaithMemorialChapel.org).
--> Food & Fun: Following the service, we will move to a park in the nearby Connestee Falls community for a covered-dish picnic. Beverages, plates, cups, napkins, etc., will be provided. The park offers a covered picnic area, a child’s swimming area, horseshoes, volleyball and paved basketball court. Please bring your own sports equipment.
***Please Note: The picnic takes place in a gated community, so we need to send a list of drivers ahead of time. Please sign the sheet in the foyer or contact the church office if you plan to attend the picnic.
--> History: Faith Memorial Chapel was started by Bishop Ellison Capers over 100 years ago. In 1936 the Rev’d Alexander R. Mitchell started a renewal which resulted in the revival of the Chapel for the summer community. He was then rector of St. James, and many members of this parish have had a continuing role in the ministry of the Chapel Board. The Chapel has developed an interdenominational tradition.
--> Remember: On June 3 at St. James, services of Holy Eucharist will take place at the regular times (7:45, 9:00 and 11:00 am).

Camp Gravatt 2012 - An Episcopal Tradition Camp Gravatt is taking camper registrations and staff applications for summer 2012. RECTOR’S MESSAGE

STRAW – UNTIL SOMETHING BETTER COMES ALONG

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

St. Thomas Aquinas was one of the greatest theologians in all of Christian history – arguably the greatest. He lived from 1225 to 1274, and spent the majority of his life in the Dominican order, studying and teaching throughout Italy and France, most notably in Paris and Naples.

Among his extensive writings, his most famous work is the five-volume Summa Theologica. It is in three parts, dealing with God and creation, the human person as a free moral agent and Christ as humanity’s way to God. It is a wonderful example of that pre-Enlightenment combination of theology, philosophy and natural science, which, while not the way we view things today, is a wonderfully synthesizing way to view the world.

A favorite quotation from St. Thomas, especially amongst those who do not want to be bothered with reading his works, was spoken by him after an especially powerful divine revelation while celebrating Mass on December 6, 1273:

“All that I have written seems to me like so much straw compared to what I have seen and what has been revealed to me.”

What exactly the content of his divine revelation was we do not know. We know only that it was powerful enough to cause him to cease work on his Summa Theologica, never writing again.

I have no doubt that his revelation was genuine and that, in comparison to what he experienced, all his writings would have seemed like straw. Yet, it is his writing, his thinking, his deeply prayerful theology that has enabled the Church to come to a deeper understanding of God in many and powerful ways. To him, it was straw. To those of us who have not yet been granted a divine revelation as direct and palpable as his, his straw is our meat.

I cannot commend the Summa Theologica to you as a ripping good yarn, a real page turner or even the perfect book with which to curl up on a rainy day. It is hard work to read, and it must be read within its historical context and its own particular academic idiom.

I can, however, commend to you a book that is filled with ripping good yarns, in parts is a real page turner and is the perfect book with which to curl up on a rainy day. You probably have a copy at home – we have them in the pews now, as well – the Holy Bible.

Perhaps when we are on the other side of the glass through which now see only dimly, we will find the words of Holy Scripture to be as woefully inadequate in expressing the beauty of the one God as St. Thomas found his own works. But until that blessed day comes, I will take straw over nothing.

Hunger and Poverty in Greenville and Beyond
For two more Sundays, John Shelley will facilitate an introduction to a few of the complex realities that we describe as “poverty”. We’ll discuss pages from David Shipler, The Working Poor: Invisible in America (Vintage Press, 2004, 2005). Several books will be available at the class this Sunday.
• May 13: Children in Poverty. Read pages 201-253 in Shipler. These pages (“Body and Mind” and “Dreams”) focus on the physical, psychological, emotional, and aspirational threats to children living in poverty.

Bereavement Support Group
“Through the Valley” is the Bereavement Support Group run by Lutheran Hospice. The first meeting of this 10-week group will be Tuesday, May 15th, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Target audience is adults who have suffered an adult loss, including a spouse, a parent, or a grown son or daughter. St. James Day at Faith Memorial Chapel - Enjoy a Great Tradition:
--> Service: On Sunday, June 3, 2012, you are invited to join a pilgrimage of people from St. James to Faith Memorial Chapel in Cedar Mountain, NC. The service of Morning Prayer starts at 11:00 am. Father Geoff will be the guest preacher, and our organist and members of the choir will take part in the service.
--> The drive to Faith Chapel is a beautiful mountain drive past Caesar’s Head and the entrance to Camp Greenville. It is about a one-hour drive depending upon traffic (directions at www.FaithMemorialChapel.org).
--> Food & Fun: Following the service, we will move to a park in the nearby Connestee Falls community for a covered-dish picnic. Beverages, plates, cups, napkins, etc., will be provided. The park offers a covered picnic area, a child’s swimming area, horseshoes, volleyball and paved basketball court. Please bring your own sports equipment.
***Please Note: We need to send a participants list ahead of time, so please sign up in the foyer or contact the church office if you plan to attend the picnic.
--> History: Faith Memorial Chapel was started by Bishop Ellison Capers over 100 years ago. In 1936 the Rev’d Alexander R. Mitchell started a renewal which resulted in the revival of the Chapel for the summer community. He was then rector of St. James, and many members of this parish have had a continuing role in the ministry of the Chapel Board. The Chapel has developed an interdenominational tradition.

Jazz Concert for Mission and Outreach

THE THEOLOGY OF JAZZ

What can we learn about God through the music of jazz? Is there a theology of jazz? Why are there interstate highways in Hawaii? When it rains, why don't sheep shrink?

At least two of these questions will be addressed at the third annual Jazz Concert for Mission and Outreach at St. James Episcopal Church on Friday, May 18 at 7:00pm.

Once again, the Rev’d D. Geoffrey Taylor, rector of St. James, will prove that a complete inability to play the piano should never stop one from giving a concert. “Are we not people of faith? Do we not have sufficient trust in God that what we do in his name he will make perfect? Didn’t Jesus tell us not to worry about what we will say because the Holy Spirit will speak through us? If you ask me, the Holy Spirit can probably play some pretty mean jazz riffs, too. Who are we to limit the Holy Spirit to words, alone?”

When asked if he thought the Holy Spirit could sing as well, Fr. Taylor answered, “Oh Lord, yes. The Holy Spirit has a beautiful voice, but it’s right in that awkward range between baritone and tenor, so you have to transpose most of the songs into a more comfortable key.”

All proceeds from the concert will go to “Stop Hunger Now,” an international hunger relief organization that coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the world.

RECTOR’S MESSAGE

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

My sophomore year in high school was my first year away from home, having left Connecticut to attend North Carolina School of the Arts. That spring, I went with my roommate to visit his home in Charlotte, NC. It was a rare treat to be able to spend a weekend away from campus.

As we drove through his neighborhood in Charlotte, my roommate was pointing out places of interest – his former high school, for instance – and as we approached a rather imposing church with a high steeple, he said, “That’s my church.” It was a Methodist Church, and I made the appropriate sounds indicating how impressed I was by the building when a large sign on the front lawn caught my eye. It read as follows:

School

“What’s that sign about?” I asked my roommate. “Vacation Bible School,” he answered. “I know what it says,” I responded, “but what does it mean?” “It means Vacation Bible School,” he answered again, looking at me as if he was wondering if I had suffered a severe blow to my head.

Things quickly devolved into a “Who’s on first?” dialogue. I kept on asking him what the sign meant, and he kept on saying exactly what was on the sign, “Vacation, Bible, School!” Each time, he spoke more loudly, much like an American tourist who is sure that if one simply screams, then someone who doesn’t understand English will finally understand what one is saying.

The root of the problem was that where I grew up we did not have Vacation Bible School. I was 16-years-old, and I had never even heard of Vacation Bible School. To make things even more complicated, in my experience, I could not get any of the words to work together to make any sense at all. Vacation and Bible? I couldn’t think of two more contradictory words. Bible and school? Not in Connecticut in the 1970’s, no way, no how! Vacation and school? An obvious oxymoron.

Finally my roommate understood my problem (or at least that particular problem) and explained to me that Vacation Bible School was a program at his church in which kids came to church during summer vacation, engaged in a lot of activities that sounded like camp to me, and also heard Bible stories. Well, you learn something new every day!

Much like grits, boiled peanuts, deer hunting, running a trotline, understanding the difference between “y’all” and “all y’all,” dropping the letter “g” off of the end of nearly every word, learning to speak a lot more slowly and, finally, beginning to enjoy making fun of Yankees, this episode is part of what I refer to as “The Southernization of Geoff Taylor.”

Learning about Vacation Bible School (and all of the other things, as well) came in quite handy given that I was ordained in Georgia and now serve in South Carolina. The ability to ice skate and cross-country ski have never been of use to me in this part of the world.

To the outsider, the benefit of Vacation Bible School might be thought to be that we bolster and underpin the faith of our young children as they come together to eat, sing songs, hear Bible stories, do crafts and have a lot of fun in the place we hope will be home to them for the rest of their lives – the Church.

While all of that is true, those of us in the Church realize that there is every bit as much benefit derived by the older youth and adults who volunteer to help in Vacation Bible School. I know from teaching children in Sunday School and in school chapel that you learn a lot more about Bible stories when you have to explain them to children than when you simply read them on your own.

Thus, for those of you who grew up going to Vacation Bible School, and for those of you who, like me, needed a translator the first time you ever read the phrase, I extend an invitation to you to bring your children, your grandchildren, friends of the family and neighbors to our Vacation Bible School (June 24-28, 2012). And more than that, I invite you to stay and lend a hand. It is amazing what our children can teach us.

OUTREACH MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES

New Ministry Opportunity—Serve at the Frazee Center:
For several years, St. James has provided funding to send students from the Frazee Center to Camp Bob at Kanuga. We have now increased our involvement with those students as we provide dinner for them two Thursdays each month. The work is easy and requires no special training or expertise. We serve dinner and spend time with the children. All are welcome to serve. It’s a great opportunity for families to minister together. Hours for our ministry are 4:00–6:30 pm, and you can come for any part of that time. Upcoming dates are May 10 and 24. More information and sign up sheets are available on the Frazee Bulletin Board in the main hallway upstairs or you may contact John Kaup (241-1086 or john.kaup@furman.edu).

Greenville Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (GAIHN)
A training session will be offered on Saturday, May 12, at 4:00 p.m. Join us in the Parish Life Center to learn more about the GAIHN ministry.

Hunger and Poverty in Greenville and Beyond
For two more Sundays, John Shelley will facilitate an introduction to a few of the complex realities that we describe as “poverty”. On May 6 and 13 we’ll discuss pages from David Shipler, The Working Poor: Invisible in America (Vintage Press, 2004, 2005). Several books will be available at the class this Sunday.
• May 6: Experiences of Persons Living in Poverty. Read pages 3-76 in Shipler, The Working Poor. These pages focus on experiences over time of persons interviewed by Shipler. If time is short, give special attention to pp. 50-76, the story of Caroline and her daughter.
• May 13: Children in Poverty. Read pages 201-253 in Shipler. These pages (“Body and Mind” and “Dreams”) focus on the physical, psychological, emotional, and aspirational threats to children living in poverty.

Greenville Literacy Association needs many volunteers to help other adults improve their reading, writing and math skills, prepare for the GED or learn to speak English. St. James Day at Faith Memorial Chapel - Enjoy a Great Tradition:
--> Service: On Sunday, June 3, 2012, you are invited to join a pilgrimage of people from St. James to Faith Memorial Chapel in Cedar Mountain, NC. The service of Morning Prayer starts at 11:00 am. Father Geoff will be the guest preacher, and our organist and members of the choir will take part in the service.
--> The drive to Faith Chapel is a beautiful mountain drive past Caesar’s Head and the entrance to Camp Greenville. It is about a one-hour drive depending upon traffic (directions at www.FaithMemorialChapel.org).
--> Food & Fun: Following the service, we will move to a park in the nearby Connestee Falls community for a covered-dish picnic. Beverages, plates, cups, napkins, etc., will be provided. We will need to send a participants list ahead of time, so please sign up in the foyer or contact the church office if you plan to attend the picnic. The park offers a covered picnic area, a child’s swimming area, horseshoes, volleyball and paved basketball court. Please bring your own sports equipment.
--> History: Faith Memorial Chapel was started by Bishop Ellison Capers over 100 years ago. In 1936 the Rev’d Alexander R. Mitchell started a renewal which resulted in the revival of the Chapel for the summer community. He was then rector of St. James, and many members of this parish have had a continuing role in the ministry of the Chapel Board. The Chapel has developed an interdenominational tradition.

Elaine Rowe Walters (1924 - 2012)

Elaine Rowe Walters of Greenville, SC, died peacefully surrounded by family at NHC Greenville on Saturday, April 21, 2012. She was 87 years old.

She was born in Melbourne, Australia on June 23, 1924. There she met and married Marine Captain Roy L. Walters in 1943. They resided in Monroe, NC until their retirement years in Sneads Ferry, NC.

She was predeceased by her husband on September 10, 2006. Those left to cherish her memory include daughter, Sara Hartnett of Greensboro, NC; daughter, Kit McClure of Wilmington, NC; son, Cam Walters and his wife Becky of Greenville, SC; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Elaine was formerly an active member at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Monroe. She was most recently a member of St. James Episcopal Church of Greenville, SC. In Monroe, she particularly enjoyed promoting and instructing ladies tennis. Those who knew and loved her best, remember her beauty, love, Australian accent and cooking.

We would especially like to thank the staff at NHC Greenville for their love and care over the past 6 years.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 2:00 PM, at the Walters Family Cemetery, Landsford Rd., Monroe, NC.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

For those of you who have been reading these Rector’s Messages for a few years now, you understand that they range from the very serious to the tongue-in-cheek (c.f. “Paschal Ovum Quest” in which I advocated for a new name for the Easter Egg Hunt). Some of these messages are deeply theological, some chatty, some are written to deliver important news to the parish. And now and then, but relatively infrequently, you receive a Rector’s Message that is something along the lines of a spiritual rambling – with some far more rambling than spiritual. Today’s message is one of the latter.

I arrived home from Atlanta last night planning to write a Rector’s Message on my computer, but in this part of the world, when spring thunderstorms begin to roll through, you have to unplug the computer. No surge protector can defend against the endless lightning strikes that flash like magnesium explosions followed by cracks that sound as if whole trees are splitting open. In fact, sometimes they are.

When the rain slowly morphs from a hammer-hit symphony to a more steady and gentle pouring – like a ewer of water being emptied into a baptismal font – and the thunder begins to roll instead of crack, you might be past the danger point, unless another arm of a spinning, state-sized storm swings over you, remounting the attack.

At such times, a pen is taken up like a favorite guitar that you never seem to find the time to play. And slowly, you begin to tease the music out of it, words that are created by hand, crafted, shaped and chosen so much more carefully than those digital words, manifestations of miniscule electric pulses, ethereal pictures of what are really only zeroes and ones, light words that can appear far too quickly and vanish in an instant if the lightning so chooses.

No more “screen” words – a counter-intuitive name for the canvas on which people too often splatter words without screening them – now the pen must be mated with a more suitable, a more classic partner: paper.

Lone sheets pulled from the ream that sits inside the now-useless printer; a favorite format, the bold, yellow sea of a legal pad across which the pen can sail; the mottled black and white cardboard covered essay book of school days long gone but now relived; a journal, bound in cloth or leather, pages thick and thirsty for ink, perhaps a slim ribbon to mark the place – and more importantly the time – you last had the courage or the urgent need to set down ink and words and thoughts in something that has the look and heft of permanence – a true book of you.

Once mated, the pause. The pause that no computer ever causes. The pause that is counter to the urgent, almost manic, tapping that fills in the space of the email – that tone deaf beast that urges us to “ready, fire, aim,” and then wonder, with no sense of the ironic, why the recipient failed to understand exactly what we meant. The pause, the pause that is so dreaded by the texters that it is nearly always followed by “r u still there?” as if stopping for a moment to think creates an anti-Cartesian lack of existence.

But with pen and mated paper, the pause is a wonderful, magical thing. The pause is that silent, still moment in which the conductor’s arms are raised, the orchestra seems poised to leap forward in an eruption of notes, and the audience breathes as only the dead can breathe – completely immobile – lest any movement of the air destroy the fragile silence. The pause is the moment in which the athlete, statue-like, on the very margin of the diving board, seems frozen in a motion that is no motion at all, the ephemeral instant before they hurl themselves into the air and the beauty and the water.

The pause is the fear-filled instant before pen strokes paper, marking it forever, marring the flawless surface with that first line that is destined to form letter, word and, ultimately, the thoughts of the heart.

In overcoming the pause, one is set free, as in fighting the forces of gravity, a plane breaks loose and becomes less a machine and more a creation of the human mind that has become reality, soaring above the land to which it was only moments before adhered by the seemingly unbreakable power of nature.

In overcoming the pause, in taking the risk that the pen and the ink and the word and the thought might mar rather than enhance the paper, one is released from fear and set loose in the wild environment of the mind and the imagination. That which was once only an idea, only a thought, only a shadow of a mind-picture is now real, flowing from mind to hand to pen to paper, captured in that woven fabric that was once a tree but now can be a desert or an ocean or a forest.

Overcoming the pause is what we are all called to do. Overcoming the pause that causes us to hesitate before doing that which we know we are called to do by God. Overcoming the pause that causes us to stop before praying rather than pouring out the unpasteurized cries of our hearts to God. Overcoming the pause that causes us to rationalize why we should not, why we cannot, possibly live as God is calling us to live.

As in writing with pen on ink, once the pause is overcome, we are set free, free from our fears, free from our concerns, free from worrying about how others will see us, and we are set free to do God’s work in the world.

OUTREACH MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES

Serve at the Frazee Center:
For several years, St. James has provided funding to send students from the Frazee Center to Camp Bob at Kanuga. We have now increased our involvement with those students as we provide dinner for them two Thursdays each month. Thanks to everyone who helped on Thursday, April 12 & 26! The work is easy and requires no special training or expertise. We serve dinner and spend time with the children. All are welcome to serve. It’s a great opportunity for families to minister together. Hours for our ministry are 4:00–6:30 pm, and you can come for any part of that time. Upcoming dates are April 26, and May 10 and 24. Hunger and Poverty in Greenville and Beyond
For three Sundays beginning April 29, John Shelley will facilitate an introduction to a few of the complex realities that we describe as “poverty”. On May 6 and 13 we’ll discuss assigned pages from David Shipler, The Working Poor: Invisible in America (Vintage Press, 2004, 2005). Several books will be available at the class this Sunday.
• April 29: Basic Questions: What do we mean by the “poverty line”? Are there better ways to calculate such a line? Why did Congress and President Clinton replace the AFDC program with TANF in 1996? What can and cannot be purchased with SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, the official name of what is commonly referred to as “food stamps”)? Etc.
• May 6: Experiences of Persons Living in Poverty. Read pages 3-76 in Shipler, The Working Poor. These pages focus on experiences over time of persons interviewed by Shipler. If time is short, give special attention to pp. 50-76, the story of Caroline and her daughter.
• May 13: Children in Poverty. Read pages 201-253 in Shipler. These pages (“Body and Mind” and “Dreams”) focus on the physical, psychological, emotional, and aspirational threats to children living in poverty.

Bereavement Support Group
“Through the Valley” is the Bereavement Support Group run by Lutheran Hospice. The first meeting of this 10-week group will be Tuesday, May 15th, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Target audience is adults who have suffered an adult loss, including a spouse, a parent, or a grown son or daughter. The group will meet at The Lutheran Church of Our Savior (2600 Wade Hampton Blvd, Greenville). Contact Cindy Abrams (848-1777) for information and sign up.

Greenville Literacy Association: Volunteers needed.
What can you do with an hour a week! How about changing a life! Greenville Literacy Association needs many volunteers to help other adults improve their reading, writing and math skills, prepare for the GED or learn to speak English. Parish Fellowship Weekend at Kanuga
May 25-27, 2012
The Parish Fellowship Weekend is a time-honored tradition for St. James folks of all ages and stages. Kanuga isn’t just a place, it’s an experience. Located just 50 minutes from St. James and nestled in the mountains of Hendersonville, NC, Kanuga Conference Center is the perfect place to “get away.” And we’d love to have everyone join us for this Parish Fellowship Weekend! The weekend cost is WELL WORTH the activities we have planned:
Adult (19 years and up): $172.50; Youth (10-18 years): $93.50; Child (5-9 years): $55. This includes 2 nights' lodging in rustic and quiet cabins, 6 delicious meals, kids crafts, games, activities, hikes, as well as plenty of social and/or alone time. St. James Day at Faith Memorial Chapel - Enjoy a Great Tradition:
--> Service: On Sunday, June 3, 2012, you are invited to join a pilgrimage of people from St. James to Faith Memorial Chapel in Cedar Mountain, NC. The service of Morning Prayer starts at 11:00 am. Father Geoff will be the guest preacher, and our organist and members of the choir will take part in the service.
--> The drive to Faith Chapel is a beautiful mountain drive past Caesar’s Head and the entrance to Camp Greenville. It is about a one-hour drive depending upon traffic (directions at www.FaithMemorialChapel.org).
--> Food & Fun: Following the service, we will move to a park in the nearby Connestee Falls community for a covered-dish picnic. Beverages, plates, cups, napkins, etc., will be provided. We will need to send a participants list ahead of time, so please sign up in the foyer or contact the church office if you plan to attend the picnic. The park offers a covered picnic area, a child’s swimming area, horseshoes, volleyball and paved basketball court. Please bring your own sports equipment.
--> History: Faith Memorial Chapel was started by Bishop Ellison Capers over 100 years ago. In 1936 the Rev’d Alexander R. Mitchell started a renewal which resulted in the revival of the Chapel for the summer community. He was then rector of St. James, and many members of this parish have had a continuing role in the ministry of the Chapel Board. The Chapel has developed an interdenominational tradition.
--> Remember: On June 3 at St. James, services of Holy Eucharist will take place at the regular times (7:45, 9:00 and 11:00 am).

Annual Attic Sale: Saturday, June 9, 2012, 8:00 am - 1:00 pm.
For your convenience a storage unit at Public Storage (at the bottom of Piney Mtn. Rd. across from BiLo) has been rented for items for the attic sale during April and May. For our convenience please place small, clean, usable items in a box and store neatly in the unit. Pick up the key from the church office. Camp Gravatt 2012 - An Episcopal Tradition Camp Gravatt is taking camper registrations and staff applications for summer 2012. Camp sessions are available for boys and girls entering first through twelfth grades. At Camp Gravatt campers make friends, share in an affirming Christian community, experience unconditional love, and have fun! Activities include archery, arts-and-crafts, canoeing, environmental education, swimming, challenge course, campfires, singing, Episcopal worship, Bible study and more. Staff members work to nurture and develop campers' self-esteem, rather than competitive expertise in a particular sport or skill. Preparing for General Convention: Update and Dialogue on the Rite for Same Gender Blessings

Please join our deputies to General Convention and Bishop Waldo for a brief review of the major issues before The Episcopal Church this July in Indianapolis, and a detailed review of the status of the rite for same gender blessings. These gatherings will also offer participants the opportunity for dialogue on the proposed rite and its impact on Upper South Carolina.

The meeting will be held on Saturday, April 28 at the Church of the Advent in Spartanburg, SC. The schedule is as follows:
