RECTORS MESSAGE
ASSISTANT. ASSOCIATE. WHATS THE DIFFERENCE?
May 25, 2012
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
This is a long overdue letter, as I should have taken a moment to explain this issue to you in January. However, things being as they are, it is better late than never.
As many of you know, when I first came to St. James we had a half-time priest in addition to the rector. When that position became vacant, with the help of a committee, I called The Revd Roxanne Ruggles to join us at St. James. She began as a half-time employee. At the beginning of her second year with us, we were able to bring her to three-quarter time. And this year, because of the foresight of our Vestry, a healthy stewardship program and the increasing number of activities in which St. James is involved, Mother Roxanne was made a full-time priest in this parish.
Contemporaneously with bringing her up to full-time status, I changed Mother Roxannes title from Assistant Rector to Associate Rector. I can hear some of you saying, Assistant. Associate. Whats the big difference?
The difference is, in this case, in the eyes and the strategic planning of the person bestowing the title. I have a fairly strong litmus test to tell the difference between an assistant rector and an associate rector, but not all rectors have such a test. Some people inherit the title from their predecessor a dangerous precedent, if you ask me others are called associate but function more like my idea of an assistant, while others are called assistant yet function far more like my idea of an associate.
For me, an assistant rector is, at first, an entry level position for a newly ordained priest in a multi-clergy parish. Most come out of seminary with very little day-to-day experience of working in a church, and many come out of seminary firm in the belief that the way they were taught to do things in seminary is the only way to do things. I imagine this is true with other people who have come out of graduate school training new lawyers, new doctors, etc.
An associate rector, by contrast, is a priest with enough experience to function as part of team, who is intelligent enough to develop and suggest new ways of doing things while being politic enough to understand that not all new things are, necessarily, good ideas. An associate rector, in the perfect world, has several years of experience working in the church and can serve as an advisor to the rector, not simply as a person who must be given precise directions regarding what they should do when.
An associate rector is the type of person to whom a rector can give a great deal of autonomy, knowing that the person is wise enough to discuss things before simply doing them. While not a second rector, an associate rector is a person in whom the rector has a great deal of trust and to whom the rector gives a great deal of support.
As you have probably discerned by now, I do not hand out the title of associate rector lightly. We at St. James, however, were fortunate enough to call a new priest who had already spent her whole career working in the church. While seminary is certainly a crucial part of the education and formation of a priest, nothing can compare to the years spent in the office of church, seeing what really happens day-to-day rather than sitting in a classroom and hearing someone discuss the theory of how a church should function.
Heres the catch: it is hard to hold on to associate rectors as Ive described them. Churches in the midst of searching for rectors often know that a talented associate rector is someone who has several years of experience and is a far better choice than a rector who has one year of experience ten times.
We are blessed to have Mother Roxanne amongst us. We have recruited a wonderful staff at St. James without whom I could not function as the rector.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Geoff+

OUTREACH MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES
Third Mission Trip to Alabama 2012
In April 2011 two F4 and three F3 category tornadoes swept through Dekalb County, Alabama, killing 33 people and destroying over 200 houses and damaging countless others. That year the Foothills Convocation of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina sent two teams to that area to help. Our volunteer contact tells us that he still has over 170 requests for help. This year the Foothills Convocation has sent two teams--one in March, the other in April. The dates for the third trip are June 17-22. The cost is $100 plus a share of carpool gas. All ages and genders are welcome. If you are interested, please contact Al Hipp, Foothills Convocational Deacon, at thomashipp@att.net.

St. James Day at Faith Memorial Chapel - Enjoy a Great Tradition:
--> Service: On Sunday, June 3, 2012, you are invited to join a pilgrimage of people from St. James to Faith Memorial Chapel in Cedar Mountain, NC. The service of Morning Prayer starts at 11:00 am. Father Geoff will be the guest preacher, and our organist and members of the choir will take part in the service.
--> The drive to Faith Chapel is a beautiful mountain drive past Caesars Head and the entrance to Camp Greenville. It is about a one-hour drive depending upon traffic (directions at www.FaithMemorialChapel.org).
--> Food & Fun: Following the service, we will move to a park in the nearby Connestee Falls community for a covered-dish picnic. Beverages, plates, cups, napkins, etc., will be provided. The park offers a covered picnic area, a childs swimming area, horseshoes, volleyball and paved basketball court. Please bring your own sports equipment.
***Please Note: The picnic takes place in a gated community, so we need to send a list of drivers ahead of time. Please sign the sheet in the foyer or contact the church office if you plan to attend the picnic.
--> History: Faith Memorial Chapel was started by Bishop Ellison Capers over 100 years ago. In 1936 the Revd Alexander R. Mitchell started a renewal which resulted in the revival of the Chapel for the summer community. He was then rector of St. James, and many members of this parish have had a continuing role in the ministry of the Chapel Board. The Chapel has developed an interdenominational tradition.
--> Remember: On June 3 at St. James, services of Holy Eucharist will take place at the regular times (7:45, 9:00 and 11:00 am).
