RECTORS MESSAGE
STEWARDSHIP: ITS NOT ALWAYS WHAT YOU THINK IT IS
June 9, 2010
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
As some of you know, last Friday I went to the doctor. I have had a small hernia for three decades now, and a few hours before Mikes funeral it seemed to be causing me a good bit of discomfort (medical-speak for pain). Luckily, I have a doctor who was willing to fit me into his tight schedule, and I did, in fact, still have a hernia, but he also was able to diagnose a not-unrelated minor condition that he began to treat.
Diagnosis (from the Greek for through knowledge) is an art in many fields, but none more so than in medicine. I am consistently impressed by my doctors ability to diagnose things of which I was not aware. The last time I saw him was five days before the concert I gave in February. I went in because one finger was causing me a great deal of discomfort when I played piano and, although not the greatest pianist who ever walked the earth, I do prefer to have at least all ten digits available should I choose to use them. What amazed me about that visit was he noticed something in my demeanor, ran a quick test and determined that I had the flu. Fortunately, he caught it very early, and after a couple of days rest and some medicine, I was able to play the concert.
So, two doctor visits in about five months and two things diagnosed that I didnt even know I had. It makes one think.
I am approaching fifty years old (even as I write this, I know my brothers will read this and say Hes almost 50? Wait! Hes the youngest! Sorry, guys). It is an age that for most men marks the beginning of some new and exciting medical tests. My mother and my uncle both had colon cancer, so I am at least running ahead of schedule on colonoscopies. But for most men, at 50 they become an annual event much like the running of the bulls at Pamplona, but without the white shirt and the red neckerchief.
PSAs (a kinder-gentler test for prostate cancer), EKGs, stress tests, the list gets a bit longer every year, but it seems that 50 (with exceptions for family history) is the magic year for most of us.
Unfortunately, far too many men do not take advantage of their access to medical treatment, and they resist going to the doctor with more vigor than most Episcopalians resist going to church in the summer. (See how I just slipped that in there?)
But going to the doctor, getting checked for things that, if caught early enough, can be treated and cured with relative ease, is a form of stewardship. It is a form of stewardship not only of the body that God gave us, but for those of us with families it is stewardship of our marriage vows and the responsibility we take on when we choose to have children.
The resistance on the part of men (my wife said that many women are the same way about mammograms and other annual tests, but Ive lived far too long to presume to speak for women) is, I believe, based not on machismo nor on a sense of invulnerability (most of us lose that in our late 20s) but in fear. There seems to be a deep-seated fear on the part of many men that the cure is worse than the disease, or that finding out they have a disease is the equivalent of a death sentence. Neither, I assure you, is true.
While I know of no one who looked forward to any particularly invasive cardiac procedure, neither do I know of anyone who seemed particularly happy to be dying of an undiagnosed cardiac problem. Cancer treatments, while sometimes unpleasant to say the least, are, for cancers caught in the early stages, far more preferable to what happens when cancer goes undiagnosed.
If we truly believe what we say about God, what we say in our marriage vows, what we teach our children about caring for their own bodies, then we should be practicing active stewardship of our bodies. We should get that annual check-up. We should face our fears and be relieved when we find them to be unfounded or somewhat relieved when we find that something that could have been far more serious was found early.
If we approached stewardship of the buildings at St. James the way too many men approach stewardship of their bodies, the Vestry and I would be facing open revolt. Your Junior Warden and your whole Vestry understand that it is always less expensive to fix problems in the early stages than to wait until they spread. This month we spent twelve hundred dollars replacing rotted woodwork adjacent to the roof, thereby saving ourselves tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars had we simply ignored it, hoped it went away, and then found the whole roof system compromised.
Why would we practice that kind of stewardship for our buildings yet ignore that body in which we dwell?
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Geoff+

United Ministries: For information on what is happening now, what events are coming soon and how you can become involved, visit www.united-ministries.org.
Adult Christian Education Class: Mission Work in Haiti. Sunday, June 13, 10:00 AM in the conference room.
This week Rimes McElveen will share experiences during his trip to Fondwa, Haiti and give us information concerning how we can continue to be involved in this important work.
How You Can Help the People of Fondwa, Haiti
What you can do right now:
1) Decide to be a sponsor. You can sponsor a child in the St. Antione School for $25/month to provide 5 meals a week, daily vitamins, regular anti-parasite medication and yearly nutritional assessments. More than 300 students are
unsponsored at this time. You can sponsor a teacher's salary/training for
$85/month. For more information, go to www.familyhm.org or call/email Kathryn.
2) Make a donation to Family Health Ministries: on-line or by mail to: PO Box 16725, Chapel Hill, NC, 27516-6725
3) Consider what specialized skills, natural abilities/gifts, personal interests you have that may be helpful. Pray about what you can do to support the people of Haiti.
Other opportunities available in the future:
1) Travel to Haiti with a mission team. There will be many future opportunities to travel to Haiti for relief work. There will be a need for both skilled and unskilled labor. If you are interested in being a part of a future mission team, please email or call Kathryn or Rimes McElveen.
2) Opportunities to financially support larger projects (school, guesthouse, medical clinic, or orphanage reconstruction; digging wells/cistern systems; building homes, etc.) As specific strategies are developed by the APF and partner organizations, there will be opportunities to support their efforts.
